Community Compost Guidelines

Please follow the instructions posted near the bins, next to the shed – including the use of browns (wood chips, dried leaves, etc.) in equal amounts when composting. You can find the browns in the steel drums near the compost containers.

We accept kitchen scraps and other greens, except:
• Yard waste, including branches, dried yard waste, etc. (due to space concerns)
• Plastic bags or “compostable” green bags (will not break down)
• “Compostable” packaging or silverware (will not break down)
• Tomato or potato plants (these can harbor blight), but non-diseased tomatoes and potatoes are OK
• Weeds or invasive plants (we don’t want them to spread)
• Diseased or insect-ridden plants or fruit or vegetables
• Plants treated with chemical pesticides
• Black walnut trees or leaves (these act as a natural herbicide)
• Coal or charcoal ash
• Eggs and dairy (egg shells are fine)
• Fats, grease, lard, or oils
• Meat or fish bones and scraps
• Pet waste

We separately accept shredded, bagged leaves, which should be left outside the compost bin.

No yard waste. We do not have the capacity to compost yard waste.
