Volunteer

Get your hands dirty, learn something new, and help grow a more food-just community in Ward 5.

Edgewood Community Farm runs the most regular, largest, and most flexible volunteer day of any urban farm or garden in the DMV area. We're here every Sunday, rain or shine, unless otherwise announced, and usually welcome 20 to 30 volunteers each week.

Join us for drop-in volunteer days every Sunday from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. (10 a.m.–1 p.m. in July and August due to summer heat). No registration or membership is required, and you don't have to arrive right at the start, stay the whole time, or stay until we close. That said, we recommend arriving at least 45 minutes before we wrap up to make the most of your time and get some good work done. Just show up and we'll put you to work!

What to Bring

  • Close-toed shoes that you don't mind getting dirty or stained

  • A hat, bug spray, and sunscreen

  • A water bottle

  • Clothes you can comfortably work in

What We Provide

We'll provide the tools, guidance, and plenty of opportunities to learn. After volunteering, we'll share a meal with you and send you home with fresh produce and flowers from the farm.

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we can also certify volunteer hours for qualifying third-party requirements.

If you have questions about accessibility and volunteering, you can find more information here.

Have a group of 15 or more people? See this page for details on scheduling a group volunteer day.

Volunteer projects vary with the season and may include seedling starting, transplanting, planting and harvesting, pruning, weeding, mushroom inoculation, composting, irrigation, garden maintenance, carpentry, hardscaping, painting, staining, trellising, preserving food, and building farm infrastructure. We're happy to connect volunteers with whatever tasks or areas interest them most, and can adjust for anyone with mobility issues so everyone has a way to pitch in.
